Overview

Ride through two countries, perform eight international crossings, and clock 1,300km of riding on the incredible 15-Day Trans-Borneo Road Bike tour. This pioneering journey provides an epic challenge and unforgettable tour of Borneo. You’ll ride through mangroves and rubber tree plantations, flying past paddy fields and miles of coastline. Rest in idyllic fishing villages and beachside resorts, enjoying the sunset across the horizon. Three different national parks beckon, each with their own treasures to find. Ride past rivers full of dolphins, explore deep caves of bats, and spot sea turtles in the ocean water. The tour will take you through two countries with 8 international border crossings, riding into the shimmering capital city of Brunei. Then, you’ll ascend high into the mountains to reach base camp of Mount Kinabalu, the second-highest peak in Southeast Asia. This is a once in a lifetime riding journey through the best of Borneo. The tour is rated as 5/5 difficulty, with some big days and approximately 1300km cycled over the duration of the tour along both paved roads and off-road trails. Participants should be fit and comfortable on a bike, used to cycling over 100km's in a day. The tour is guided with an English-speaking guide and includes 14 breakfasts, 13 lunches, and 14 dinners, as well as drinks and snacks each day. Accommodation for 14 nights in 2, 3, and 4-star hotels and local homestays is included. Personal and luggage transfer during the tour is included, as well as airport transfers. Entrance fees to national parks and historical sites and a support vehicle are also included. The tour ends in Kota Kinabalu, where participants will be transferred to the airport. Day 1: Arrival in Kuching with a trip briefing and seafood dinner. Day 2: Ride to Maludam (133km, 141m elevation gain), cycling along the coast through mangrove forests, paddy fields, and rubber tree plantations, with a boat trip to Maludam National Park to see proboscis monkeys. Day 3: Maludam to Sarikei (124km, 576m elevation gain), cycling along a coastal road, ferry to Pusa, riding past rubber and palm plantations, and traditional Iban longhouses and birdhouses. Day 4: Cycle to Mukah (113km, 326m elevation gain), with time in Sibu market, a speedboat ride to Dalat to see the Melanau tribe and their longhouses, riding past colourful villages to a local seaside resort. Day 5: Mukah to Bintulu (138km, 280m elevation gain), cruising along the coast, stopping in towns, cycling undulating hills to a dock for a speedboat to Similajau National Park to find sea turtles, crocodiles, and dolphins, with an optional transfer to a golden-sand beach. Day 6: Cycle to Niah (136km, 717m elevation gain), heading towards northern Borneo along the picturesque coastline, stopping for lunch in Samalaju, riding through plantations, villages, and fields, exploring Niah Cave National Park. Day 7: Niah to Miri (85km, 365m elevation gain), exploring Niah National Park on foot (archaeological site, cave paintings, rainforest), riding to the resort city of Miri. Day 8: Rest day in Miri, exploring the city on foot, with optional scuba tour or day trip to nearby national parks. Day 9: Cycle to Bandar Seri Begawan (153km, 768m elevation gain), crossing the border into Brunei, cycling into the capital, exploring the Old Town, Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, and Kampong Ayer. Day 10: Ride to Lawas (136km, 1401m elevation gain), departing from the city along farm roads, crossing borders back into Malaysia and Brunei, lunch in Limbang, cycling to Lawas. Day 11: Lawas to Tenom (119km, 1854m elevation gain), entering Sabah to cross the Crocker Range, mountain scenery, downhill riding to Tenom, sampling local coffee. Day 12: Ride to Tambunan (95km, 1440m elevation gain), heading towards Keningau for lunch, riding through mountains and rolling hills, then through a terraced valley of paddy fields, farms, and villages to Tambunan. Day 13: Cycle to Kundasang (78km, 2050m elevation gain), riding to the basecamp of Mount Kinabalu, enjoying views, trying local strawberries and tomatoes, checking into a mountain resort. Day 14: Kundasang to Kota Kinabalu (60km, 964m elevation gain), quick ride to Kinabalu Park, visiting botanical gardens, stopping at Nabalu Market, cycling downhill to Kota Kinabalu, waterfront stroll, final celebratory dinner. Day 15: Goodbye, Borneo! Departure after breakfast.
