Innsbruck to Bolzano

Overview

This bike tour through Austria and Italy follows the classic Adige Cycle Path (Etsch Radweg), one of Europe’s most scenic and well-maintained cycling routes. Along the way, you’ll pass through quaint alpine villages, admire aristocratic manor houses, and explore medieval castles, fortress ruins, and historic churches. Framed by the spectacular peaks of the Austrian and Italian Alps, the journey winds through a landscape shaped by endless vineyards and apple orchards. The largely flat route offers relaxing rides past shimmering lakes such as the Montiggler Lakes, where crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding forests. Your adventure concludes in Bolzano, one of northern Italy’s most beloved cities, known not only for its spa traditions and market squares but also as the gateway to the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This self-guided tour is considered moderate with daily distances between 22 to 40 miles per day and a total of 186 miles over 6 cycling days. Routes include flat terrain and rolling hills, with some steep climbing. You will cycle on bike paths in the Inn and Adige river valleys. A bus will take you from Landeck to Nauders. From there you will cycle uphill 70 meters in altitude until you reach Reschenpass (mountain pass). Afterward, you can enjoy cycling mostly downhill for more than 1,200 meters in altitude to Bolzano. However, even in these last days, there will be some demanding climbs. The closest and most practical international airport to your tour start in Innsbruck and tour end in Bolzano is Innsbruck Airport (INN). Depending on your travel plans, you can also fly to Salzburg Airport (SZG), or Munich International Airport (MUC). However, at the end of your tour traveling from Bolzano back to either Salzburg or Munich requires 4 + hours of train travel time with several transfers. South Tyrol is located on the Southern side of the Alps and combines the advantages of a highland (especially in winter) with the advantages of (in comparison), a quite mild climate (in the valleys). You can request the GPX tracks by email which you can then upload into your device. The maps are available in offline mode to avoid data charges. Just ask us for a helpful PDF file with step by step instructions from downloading the app, to uploading the GPX tracks and hotel lists. It is each traveler's responsibility to ensure that you are in compliance with the country or countries you plan to visit. This includes and is not limited to passport validity, visa requirements and acquisition, blank passport pages required for your destination(s), etc. US citizens: A good website to research the requirements of the Schengen Agreement and entry into other countries is travel.state.gov. Non-EU and EU residents: Please research the requirements of your country of residence for international travel and your destination country or countries. Important note: Please check on the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) status as once implemented, this will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit.
