Lake Reschen to Lake Garda 8-day Self-guided Cycling Tour (Level 1)

Overview

Two lakes, as different as night and day: Reschensee and Lake Garda. What they do share is their breathtaking beauty--and they mark the start and finish of this timelessly popular cycling tour. The journey begins in northern South Tyrol, where the stunning view of Reschensee already sets the tone. Apple orchards, vineyards, castles, and palaces accompany you through the Vinschgau Valley. The lively streets and bustling piazzas of Merano and Bolzano await, before you follow the Adige River past the German-speaking border. At Lake Garda, Mediterranean charm and the spirit of "Dolce Vita" welcome you. Along the way, cultural highlights abound--be sure to visit Ötzi, the world-famous Iceman, in Bolzano. You will cycle on beautiful bike paths mainly along the Adige River. The route will lead you from the Reschenpass (mountain pass) almost 1,500 metres in altitude downhill to Lake Garda. However, you will have to cycle some small climbs too. Overall, you will find yourself on beautiful bike paths and country lanes. EUR 70 per week Departure by bus and train from Lake Garda to Resia, duration approx. 6 hours with 3 changes in Rovereto, Bolzano and Merano and from Malles by bus to Resia Day 1 Arrival in Resia Resia is a picturesque alpine destination beside the famous Lake. Enjoy the surroundings with stunning mountain views and cultural treasures. A special highlight is the submerged church tower in the lake, an iconic landmark captivating visitors from all over the world. Day 2 Resia – Silandro approx. 45km At Lake Reschen, cycle along the shore with stunning views of the iconic submerged church tower in Graun. Then explore the medieval town of Glurns, where a fully intact city wall invites you to step back in time. Your day ends in Schlanders, the vibrant heart of the Vinschgau Valley. Day 3 Silandro – Merano approx. 40km Castles and fortresses—most notably Reinhold Messner’s renowned Schloss Juval—line the route or stand proudly above it. The imposing Ortler massif and the dramatic Stilfserjoch pass guide your journey as you cycle toward the charming town of Meran, nestled amidst lush Mediterranean greenery. Day 4 Merano – Bolzano approx. 30 – 45km Two route options lead to Bolzano: one follows the Adige River, while the other takes you on a more scenic ride through South Tyrol’s lush orchards, passing charming villages like Lana and Eppan. Along the way, you’ll visit the Messner Mountain Museum, set within the beautifully restored Sigmundskron fortress. In Bolzano, savor a cappuccino at Waltherplatz and wander through the picturesque, arcaded streets. A visit to Ötzi, the famous Iceman, is an unforgettable experience you won’t want to miss. Day 5 Bolzano – Ora approx. 30km This stage is beautifully framed by abundant orchards and vineyards. Following the South Tyrolean Wine Road, you’ll pedal past a fascinating array of castles, palaces, and ruins. As you pass Lake Caldaro, don’t miss the chance to take a refreshing dip in the warmest swimming lake in the Alps, before arriving in the picturesque wine village of Ora. Day 6 Ora – Trento approx. 45km This stage mostly follows the scenic bike path along the Adige River, leading you once again through fragrant orchards until you reach Salurn, the southernmost point of the German-speaking South Tyrol. From there, you’ll continue cycling along the levee paths all the way to Trento, where a charming historic old town awaits your exploration. Day 7 Trento – Torbole/Riva approx. 50km The final stage begins in the historic Tyrolean border town of Rovereto, continues on to Mori, and then heads west toward Lake Garda. After a brief climb over the small Passo San Giovanni (about 150 meters / 490 feet), you’ll enjoy a downhill ride to the lake, arriving in either Torbole or Riva.
