Enjoy a fantastic sense of achievement by cycling the full length of Portugal on this escorted small group holiday. Start in Chaves near the border with Spain, and finish one week and 730km further south in the Algarve. Cycle the N2 north to south in a guided small group Chaves to Faro via the Douro Valley, Viseu, Evora and Alentejo Ride a section on a disused railway Low on traffic, high on beautiful scenery. This cycle the length of Portugal holiday unfolds exactly as the name suggests: beginning in the town of Chaves, just below the border with Spain, youll follow the famous N2 road south along the central spine of Portugal to finish in Faro, where you can enjoy a paddle in the Algarve to celebrate your achievement. The N2 was once a very busy thoroughfare, but it has now been replaced by a motorway, so for the most part you will only be sharing the road with local traffic. Add to that Portugals reliably fair weather, plus the warm hospitality of the Portuguese people, and the appeal of this 730km challenge becomes very obvious. While this trip is accessible to most cyclists with some practice, youll need to be capable of riding 100km for several consecutive days. There are some ascents as you would expect from a trip that crosses no fewer than four mountain ranges, but these are predominantly long and gradual, while the hairpin bends on the descents are a lot of fun. Your group and guide will stay in a series of cyclist-friendly hotels, independently-run wherever possible, and dine together in the evenings, which allows you to explore regional Portuguese cuisine. As well as being a great experience for cyclists, this trip is a brilliant way to see Portugal well beyond the busy cities and beaches, and help spread the economic benefits of tourism deep into rural parts of the country.
