8-day Self-Guided Cycle Tour around Portugal's Alentejo region. Explore undulating wheat fields, cork and eucalyptus trees, olive orchards and vineyards. This region harmonizes centuries of ancient, Roman, Arabic, Medieval and Renaissance influences. Cycle through Roman ruins, rural paradise and one of the most ancient towns in Europe: Evora, a world heritage site. Pass by the Alqueva reservoir, one of the world's best places for stargazing, at the border with Spain. Visit artisan centers, wine and cheese making farms and marble workshops. The tour is rated Level 2 cycling. Highlights include sleeping in castles, palaces and farmhouses, internationally awarded wine tastings, beautiful landscapes with vineyards, olive groves, cork oaks, Évora historical centre (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Mediaeval villages, and delicious regional Portuguese gastronomy from the Alentejo. The tour can be done in reverse for an easier grade experience, finishing with 3 nights in Évora. Included in the tour: 7 nights lodging in 3-4 star charm hotels (many in castles and convents), breakfast, personal accident insurance, use of GPS with preloaded tracks, briefing by staff, roadbook and map, and luggage transfers.
