Overview

Embark on a luxurious food and wine journey, by bike, through the breathtaking landscapes of northern Spain. The journey begins in La Rioja, celebrated for its hilltop towns, Romanesque churches, and, most notably, its prestigious wines. From Rioja, cycle north to the coastal jewel of San Sebastián, famed for its Michelin-starred gastronomy, elegant beaches, and vibrant cultural scene. Continue along the Atlantic coast to the charming fishing village of Getaria, nestled amid vineyards and dramatic seaside cliffs, before reaching Bilbao, the dynamic capital of Bizkaia. Along the way, you’ll ride through scenic valleys, rolling vineyards, and quiet coastal roads, with opportunities to explore historic villages, savor regional specialties, and unwind in carefully selected luxury accommodations that combine old-world charm with contemporary elegance. The tour concludes in Bilbao, home to Frank Gehry’s architectural masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum. We tailor every detail to your preferences, crafting a bespoke luxury cycling tour that perfectly balances adventure, culture, and comfort, creating an unforgettable Basque Country and La Rioja experience just for you. The Basque Country and La Rioja are culinary paradises, celebrated for their bold flavors and refined traditions. In the Basque region, pintxos—small, artfully prepared bites—are paired with local wines or txakoli, while La Rioja delights with its world-renowned reds and hearty, rustic dishes crafted from local ingredients. Together, they offer a feast for both the palate and the senses, reflecting centuries of gastronomic heritage. The Basque Country and La Rioja boast some of Spain’s most celebrated wines and traditional beverages. In La Rioja, elegant reds—aged to perfection—are paired with the region’s rich cuisine, while the Basque Country offers the crisp, refreshing txakoli, a lightly sparkling white wine, and an array of local cider (sidra), enjoyed in convivial, centuries-old traditions. Together, they showcase the diversity and excellence of northern Spain’s vinous heritage. Today’s bike ride will take you through the heart of the region’s celebrated wineries, where rolling vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see. Along the way, you’ll have ample opportunities to stop and sample the region’s renowned local reds, savoring the rich flavors that have made this area famous. The route winds through the charming, historic towns of Briones, Labastida, and Haro, each offering a glimpse into traditional architecture, quaint streets, and local culture. Cyclists will encounter a mix of gentle climbs that challenge the legs and exhilarating downhill stretches that reward your effort with breathtaking views of sun-drenched vineyards, terraced hills, and rustic wine estates. As you pedal through this picturesque landscape, the sights, scents, and tastes of the region combine to create a truly immersive experience—a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and gastronomy that will leave a lasting impression. This morning, we embark on our final ride through the picturesque Rioja region, cycling past sun-drenched vineyards and charming villages one last time. In the afternoon, we transfer by van to the stunning coastal city of San Sebastián, renowned for its dramatic shoreline and vibrant cultural scene. You will stay at one of Spain’s most luxurious and iconic hotels, the María Cristina, where elegance and comfort combine in true Belle Époque style. This evening is at your leisure, offering the perfect opportunity to explore the city’s famed culinary scene and indulge in the exquisite gastronomic delights that have earned San Sebastián its reputation as a world-class food capital. Leaving San Sebastián today, we follow the spectacular Basque coastline, where rugged cliffs meet the deep blue sea. Along the way, we pass the popular surf town of Zarautz, famous for its golden beaches and lively atmosphere, before arriving at the charming fishing port of Getaria, with its picturesque harbor and traditional Basque charm. Your luxurious country retreat, Hotel Iturregi, is nestled among the region’s rolling txakoli vineyards, which produce the slightly sparkling white wine for which this area is renowned. This evening, unwind in the tranquil surroundings, savoring the crisp local wine while taking in breathtaking views over the verdant vineyards and the shimmering coastline beyond. The final day of cycling takes us from Getaria along the coast back to Bilbao. Along the way, you will encounter spectacular sights, including the whimsical Oma Painted Forest in the Urdaibai Natural Reserve and the dramatic islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Upon arrival in Bilbao, you will have time to visit the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum, located just steps from your hotel. Conclude your journey with a gourmet meal at the museum’s acclaimed restaurant, followed by a leisurely stroll through the old town and a final glass of farewell txakoli.
