Northern Norway is a wonderful cycling destination, and this self guided biking tour takes you along its beautiful Arctic coast, an unspoiled landscape that’s perfect for anyone looking for a real cycling holiday adventure. Unique scenery, long summer days, wonderful light and incredible birdlife are characteristics of this part of the world, where hundreds of islands are linked by bridges and ferries. Breathe in the fresh sea air, pedal and pause when you like, exploring the striking coastline, long sandy beaches and traditional fishing villages at your own pace. This is a self guided adventure, cycling point to point for seven days, with a detailed map and guide book supplied and luggage transferred for you. You need to be relatively fit and ready to tackle some hills. Cycling distances are from 30-70km each day, on average, and routes are quiet with little traffic. Bikes are not included in this holiday, but we can arrange bike rental for you. We recommend that you cycle in a group of minimum two people. Begin in Tromsø, a buzzing city with mountains, fjords and islands all around it, and cycle through the island of Kvaløya, with its beautiful, varied terrain, before reaching the sea and the lovely island of Sommarøy. Next, a ferry transports you to Senja, the second largest island in Norway. You will cycle along the island’s west coast through really wild and spectacular natural landscape, following a road that winds up and down, and around beautiful fjords. The next island to explore by bike is Andøya, which you reach by ferry from Senja, where the scenery is diverse and gorgeous: marshes, mountains and sandy beaches. Linger here, discovering at your own pace, before heading tor Vesterålen and Sortland. You cycle to Stokmarknes on the second to last day of this holiday and from here, opt to bike towards Svolvær, or take the Hurtigruten ferry. The scenery is spectacular whichever way you travel and the tour winds up in the ‘capital’ of the Lofoten Islands, Svolvær. If you have more time and energy, you can extend this holiday and cycle down through the Lofoten Islands, too.
