Sicily is the gateway of the Mediterranean, a strategic hub between many surrounding countries including the Middle East, North Africa, Greece, France, and Spain. It is also a treasure chest of ingredients and riches. With each domination of Sicily, another layer of influence was added to create a unique tapestry. Sicily is a mix of flavors and cultures and experiences. Biking Sicily is a journey: real and raw, bold and beautiful. All memorable. The tour starts in Catania, a beautiful mix of baroque architecture, ancient Roman baths, Greek-Roman theaters, and churches. The city underwent a cultural and social rebirth with the unification of Italy, with art, literature, and music flourishing. Day 2 takes us to Palazzolo Acreide, a small village with an old Greek amphitheater, aquaducts, as well as centuries-old tombs and sacred chambers. The route goes along fields of grain, cattle, and sheep, lined with white volcanic rock. We stop at a farm for organic goat cheese tasting and lunch. The hotel in Ragusa is a converted Benedictine Monastery with enchanting gardens. Day 3 enters the UNESCO site of Val di Noto, rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style after a devastating earthquake in 1693. The ride goes through Modica, the town of 100 churches and chocolate. Modica's chocolate is made using the ancient Aztec cold-process method, resulting in a unique texture and flavor. Day 4 includes a visit to Donnafugata Castle, an interesting ancient noble house in Venetian-Gothic style. We explore the castle, its gardens, and a rock labyrinth. From there, we bike to a Masseria, a lovely inn converted from peasant housing, enjoying views of cherry tomato and citrus farms. Dinner includes local cheeses and fresh tomatoes. Day 5 offers a rest day at the Masseria or a bike ride to the coast. Options include walks, yoga, or swimming. The bike route goes to an abandoned tuna factory with trattorias and cafes. In the afternoon, a cooking class will teach how to make folded focaccia and Modica chocolate. Day 6 is a loop ride to Noto, universally recognized as the capitol city of the Baroque Style, known for its extravagant palaces and churches. The ride stops in Avola before returning to Masseria Ciancio. Dinner options include the Masseria or a seafood restaurant. Day 7 involves leaving Masseria Ciancio and moving towards ancient Syracuse. We stop at Planeta Winery for a wine tasting, olive oil tasting, and picnic. We then shuttle to Ortigia, the ancient heart of Siracusa, for a guided walking tour and a celebration dinner. Accommodations are in carefully chosen 4-star hotels, often family-owned and operated, providing a richer experience. Sample hotels include Liberty Hotel (Catania), 1768 HYBLA HOTEL (Ragusa), and Algilà (Syracuse). The tour includes a hybrid bike rental, guide with van assistance, route notes, and maps. Optional add-ons include a single room supplement. Not included are museum admissions, public transport tickets, wine/beverages, airfare, and personal expenses.
