The Rhine-Route frames the east of Switzerland in a big bow, starting with a climb across the Oberalp pass, the region of the Rhine's source, continuing through the romanisch-speaking Surselva, with impressive views of the wild valley Ruinaulta, and visiting the ratoromanian capital Chur. The route continues through the Bundner Herrschaft with the typical local wind at your side and on the Rhine dam to Lake Constance, decorated with orchards, castles, and tourist chatter. The height profile of the Rhine-Route is very steep at the beginning, followed by a spectacular panoramic stretch through the 'Swiss Grand Canyon' (Rhine Gorge), and then a jaunty up and down through the wine growing region of the Bundner Herrschaft. From Bad Ragaz, the route generally follows the Rhine.
