Overview

North-west Portugal’s timeless Atlantic hinterland. A cycling holiday in Aveiro, you might not have heard of the Aveiro region of northern Portugal, but therein lies much of its charm. Lying quietly between the cities of Coimbra and Porto, it has a proud maritime heritage, and a landscape - characterised by shallow lagoons, salt flats, lakes and traffic-free cycleways - that is a joy to discover on two wheels. Even the name (from the Roman aviarium - 'place of birds') hints at the bird-spotting opportunities on offer, and the legacy of a nautical past - from seaweed harvesting in colourful wooden boats, to candy-striped former fishermen's homes and tales of salt-cod-seeking derring-do across the Atlantic - makes this a compelling area to visit. Comfortable stays in stylish beach-front hotels. Celebrated cuisine with local dishes packed with traditional flavours. Includes 6 nights accommodation, 1 dinner, 6 breakfasts, luggage transported, high-quality bicycle, route notes, and GPS navigation. Easy cycling for all with shorter days mainly on the flat, but some gentle ascents. Terrain includes coastal routes, quiet roads, and lagoon-side tracks. Average carbon footprint of 108kg CO₂e per person, excluding travel. Accommodation includes one guesthouse and three 4-star hotels. Prices start from £1,231pp (excluding flights). Electric bikes are available (pricing confirmed at time of booking). Flights can be arranged, and connecting transfers can be booked. Consider adding an extra night in Aveiro to explore the town further. Furadouro is a great place to relax by the sea. Porto City Add-On available for 2 nights, from £245pp. Lisbon City Add-On available for 2 nights, from £170pp. A shorter 4-night 'Aveiro, Cycle the ‘Silver Coast’ - Short Break' option is available, from £975pp. The holiday season is from 01 April 2026 - 31 July 2026 and 01 September 2026 - 31 October 2026. The provided bike is a 21-gear bike with a waterproof map case, pannier/saddlebag, pump, puncture repair kit, and a lock. Helmets can be hired locally for a small fee. GPX tracks are provided for navigation on smartphones or dedicated GPS devices, along with route notes. Self-guided hotel-to-hotel cycling includes route notes with directions, practical information about points of interest, eateries, and cultural information. Luggage is transferred between hotels.
