Overview

This 4-stage route in Girona and Costa Brava combines cultural visits in an interesting city with relaxation near the beach, cycling through the beautiful landscapes of l’Empordà. Options include a guided visit to an authentic winery with a picnic, a Michelin gastronomic experience, and admiring the works of Salvador Dalí in Figueres. The Empordà region is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, with ideal terrain for grapes and olives thanks to its Mediterranean climate and soil. The tour is easy for regular cyclists, with stages averaging 35 km on a mix of quiet secondary roads and clean non-paved roads. The arrival day in Girona allows for exploration of the city's charming historic center, including the Jewish Quarter, Cathedral, and medieval walls. Optional transfers and extra nights in Girona can be arranged. Stage 1: Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols (42 km, 285 m elevation gain) follows the ‘El Carrilet’ greenway through towns like Quart, Cassà de la Selva, Llagostera, and Santa Cristina d’Aro, reaching the Mediterranean Sea. The route runs alongside the Onyar River and is backed by the Gavarres Massif, known for its cork production. Stage 2: Sant Feliu de Guíxols to Calella de Palafrugell heads north along the coast, passing through the fishing port of Palamós and the unspoiled cove of Platja de Castell. The route utilizes the ‘Ruta del Tren Petit’ greenway, ending in the picturesque former fishing town of Calella de Palafrugell. Stage 3: Calella de Palafrugell to Torroella de Montgrí travels north through areas of cultural and natural interest, including the medieval village of Pals and towns like Palau-sator and Gualta. The destination, Torroella de Montgrí, is at the foot of the Montgrí Massif and near the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park. Stage 4: Torroella de Montgrí to Castelló d’Empúries crosses the Montgrí Massif and enters the Empordà region, riding along the Bay of Roses. Highlights include the medieval village of Sant Martí d’Empúries, the archaeological site of Empúries (Greek and Roman ruins), and the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà wetlands. The journey concludes in Castelló d’Empúries, known for its Gothic church and preserved Jewish quarter. Stage 5: A loop from Castelló d’Empúries offers views of the Pyrenees and vineyards. It includes a visit to Roses and its archaeological site, La Ciutadella de Roses. The route passes notable wineries around Vilajuïga and Pau, with optional tastings available. Stage 6: Castelló d’Empúries to Figueres visits Peralada, the capital of the Empordà wine region. The route passes through villages with ancient olive groves.
