Overview

This is a short bike tour, 3 full days of cycling and one half day, for those who do not feel like taking a vacation entirely on a saddle. The tour offers scenic cycling through the stunning landscape of the Val d'Orcia, wine tasting of Brunello of Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and delights in local cuisine like Ribollita soup, Panzanella Tuscan Salad, fresh pastas, and pastries. The tour includes stays in gracious hotels with distinct regional and charming style. Tuscany's hills are perfect for exploring on two wheels, leading to lofty hill towns, broad valleys, and country roads past cypress-lined lanes and woodland. Off the bike, discover Renaissance art and architecture, visit wineries, and savor meals from local ingredients. The tour starts in Pienza, a 'perfect town' and a remarkable example of Renaissance-era town planning, known for its architecture and as a gastronomic paradise. The first loop is to San Quirico to test the bicycle and equipment, visiting the Horti Leonini Garden. The hotel in Pienza, Hotel Il Chiostro, is housed in a 15th-century convent. Day 2 involves a loop ride to Montepulciano and Monticchiello, through a scenic landscape of vineyards, cypresses, and medieval villages, with a visit to a wine cellar in Montepulciano. Day 3 takes you to Bagno Vignoni, Castiglione d'Orcia, and Montalcino, the 'Brunello land', visiting the fortress for views and a wine cellar. Day 4 involves a ride from Montalcino to Siena, passing the Monte Oliveto Maggiore monastery and the 'Le Crete' area. Options include starting with a descent through Buonconvento or heading north through Murlo to visit the Etruscan Museum. The tour ends in Siena, allowing time to explore Piazza del Campo, Torre del Mangia, and the Duomo. The tour has a total distance of 173 km (108 miles) and is rated as medium difficulty. The best period to do this tour is from March to October.
